Helping to establish Laos’ first Wildlife Rescue Center!
Starting on the 5th of July !
Laos is one of the major gateways of illegal wildlife trade from South-east Asia into China. Thousands of protected wild animals are being traded through our country every day, with only a few being rescued, confiscated or donated to the first and only official rescue center in Laos. Early 2015 the Wildlife Friends Foundation in Thailand started a partnership with the “Laos Zoo” with the objective of setting up a wildlife rescue unit to assist wildlife law enforcement and turn the zoo into a wildlife rescue facility with better care and higher animal welfare standards. This is a huge and challenging task, for which we need your help to make this happen!
There are many wild animals at the Laos Wildlife Rescue Center and the connected zoo, various species of macaques (monkeys) and gibbons as well as lorises (nocturnal primates), we also care for about 20 bears of two species, many exotic birds, crocodiles and deers. We also assist with the care of some zoo animals, but our main objective is to run a wildlife rescue facility to assist the wildlife laws enforcement.
Currently the main daily tasks at our project in Laos are helping with animal food and care, the assistance at the wildlife hospital and quarantine center and upgrading facilities at the zoo that is connected to the wildlife rescue center.
The center would not be able to run without the hard work of the volunteers and the generosity of those who provide financial support in the way of donations. If you feel you can and want to help out as a volunteer or donator please contact us.
Short and long-term volunteering stays are possible; however, volunteers are required to make a minimum commitment of three weeks. As a general rule, stays less than three weeks is not permitted.
The financial contribution you make to the center supports the costs of caring for the rescued animals and for your food and accommodation.
The accommodation is in simple bungalows within the center. Each bungalow is mainly either two or three bedded. There is a large kitchen within the main volunteer house for making breakfast and hot drinks. Lunch and dinner are cooked for you. A positive attitude towards group living and teamwork is essential. Your stay at the center will be basic and you will be expected to help with housework duties and keeping the volunteer house clean and tidy.
